North vs south facing living rooms

When it comes to choosing the perfect paint colours for your living room, understanding the direction it faces can make all the difference in setting the right mood.

In south-facing living rooms, where sunlight floods abundantly throughout the day, the possibilities are endless.

South-facing rooms thrive on brightness and warmth. While white remains a classic choice for enhancing natural light, it's important to balance it with hues that won't overpower the space or make it feel overly bright.

Try opting for soft neutrals, warm pastels, or even subtle earthy tones to complement the natural light and create a harmonious atmosphere.

In north facing living rooms, where natural light is often limited, our designers like to embrace the cosy atmosphere, rather than fight it.

While white might seem like the go-to choice to brighten up your living room, it can actually make the space feel even more cold. Instead, go for warmer, darker or bolder hues to embrace the warm ambiance.

Think deep blues, sumptuous greens, and earthy tones that have the power to transform a north-facing living room into a warm and welcoming space.

Our favourite living room paint colours

Warm neutral living rooms

Warm neutral tones are your go-to if you want to create a minimalist living room that gives calm and cosy vibes.

When looking for your ivories, beiges and taupes, make sure the shades have a warm undertones, these are typically yellow, red or orange.

This understated and subtle look is just so versatile, acting as the ideal backdrop for any décor style and creating a completely timeless space.

If you want to spice up the neutral living room look, we would suggest adding soft, natural colours like sage green and blush pink, or you can go a bit bolder with accent shades.

Bold and vibrant living rooms

A polar opposite to the neutral scheme is going completely bright and bold. We love this concept for creating a space that is totally unique and truly makes a statement.

If you want a living space that energises you, encourages conversation and get’s parties started, then bold hues are for you.

Think saturated shades such as electric blue, fuchsia pink or sunny yellow, which can be incorporated with feature walls, statement furniture or soft furnishings and décor.

Or, if you love the look but feel a little colour shy, you can go for softer and calmer pastel shades like lavender or baby blue.

Green living rooms

Green is taking the design world by storm and it’s got us all shouting from the rooftops that green is the new neutral!

As a colour for your living room, green brings a sense of calm, inviting the outdoors in and infusing your space with a fresh and airy vibe.

Whether you're leaning towards a deep emerald or a gentle sage, you're bound to create a lounge that feels like a serene retreat.

To really dive into the natural look, we love pairing green with natural materials like wood, cosy cotton, and rugged stone, as well as warm neutral shades.

Blue living rooms

Blue living rooms are the epitome of sophistication - it’s a timeless shade that is guaranteed to never go out of style. This rich and moody hue adds an air of refinement to any space, instantly taking your living room to new levels of chicness.

Whether you're rocking a deep navy accent wall or sinking into a sumptuous indigo sofa, dark blue creates a sense of depth and intrigue that's absolutely irresistible.

The calming and serene effect of blue makes it a very popular choice for the living room, plus it has extra bonus points for pairing effortlessly with so many other shades like pinks and yellows.

Grey living rooms

Whoever dissed grey clearly hasn't seen its endless shades of fabulousness! Grey is the ultimate style shapeshifter, ready to rock any design vibe you throw its way.

Grey can look a little cold and sterile, so we have a few rules to follow to make sure your living room gives off that warm and welcoming feel.

To cosy up the grey shade, pair it with warm, neutral shades and natural materials such as wooden floors, woven rugs, patterned cushions, oak coffee tables and house plants galore.

Living room paint colour hacks

Zoning open plan living rooms with colour

If you have an open plan living room, it can often be difficult to create that calm and cosy environment - that’s where colour zoning comes into play.

Like the open plan living room above, you can paint the living zone a darker hue to separate it from the rest of the space.

Painting the ceiling as well as the walls makes the lounge feel like a big, warm hug cocooning it in cosiness and privacy

Paint hacks to make a small living room feel bigger

Small living rooms can leave you feeling like you're fighting for space, and even though colour can’t physically make your space bigger, it can make it feel bigger.

Hacks such as painting the skirting boards and mouldings the same colour as your walls will elongate the room and create the feeling of more vertical space.

By also painting shelving and storage the same shade as the walls, you can make the storage effortlessly blend into the living room, creating a more airy and open feel.

Creating focal points with colour

Colour can be used in so many exciting ways in the living room and if you’re into the eclectic look, colour is the perfect way to get experimental.

Check out this funky free quarter painted wall - not only does it add so much visual interest and personality to the space, but it also magically transforms a tall living room into a cosy haven.

In the living room, you can try out so many different colour blocking ideas such as a painted arch to zone the sofa or highlight a gallery wall, or how about painting your panelling a bold shade to make it stand out?
