The land is situated on Middleton Hill to the south of Broad Chalke and adjoins the Middleton Down Nature Reserve, owned and managed by Wiltshire Wildlife Trust.
Access to the land is on foot only via public bridleway BROA6 running from Church Bottom. The Poor Patch and adjoining Nature Reserve are both designated as ‘Open Access Land’ under the Countryside Rights of Way Act 2000, which allows public access on foot.
The land slopes to the north-east and is predominantly covered by successional scrub and mixed native trees, including oak and hawthorn.

From Broad Chalke Village Centre (Queen’s Head Pub), head south on The Causeway turning left at the corner signposted to ‘Martin’ and ‘Blandford’. At the junction, proceed straight over onto the public bridleway (noting that general vehicular access is not permitted). Proceed on the bridleway for approximately 1 mile where the Poor Patch can be seen up on the bank to your right-hand side.
