About this property

Built in 1977, this four-bedroom house on the Hampshire coast has been extensively renovated with a mid-century ethos in mind, applying a playful use of colour and form to masterful effect. At the rear, generous open-plan living spaces lead to the garden, which in turn backs onto ancient sylvan woodland. Studland Drive is situated in the picturesque village of Milford-on-Sea, close to Brockenhurst and Lymington and within walking distance of the sea.

    The Tour

The house is entered through a marigold yellow-painted door that sets the tone for the striking interiors within. There is space for multiple cars in front of the house.

At the rear of the house, open-plan living spaces are loosely divided between cooking, entertaining and relaxing. The kitchen is to one side, formed of bronze green cabinetry with bold, semicircular bespoke oak handles and integrated appliances. It faces the dining room, where black-framed double doors open to the garden.

Light falls invitingly on the living room, which is slightly sunken from the rest of the space in a layout that recalls the conversation pits popular during the mid-20th century. In winter, a log burner here disperses heat throughout the room. Cobalt blue-painted stairs lead up to an office space/snug and a tucked-away utility room, which has access to the garage store space.

Stairs ascend to the first floor, where there are four well-sized, smartly decorated bedrooms. The main bedroom has built-in storage as well as an en suite with terrazzo-style tiling. A family bathroom with geometric tiles and a bold orange radiator serves the other bedroom, with a free-standing bath and a walk-in shower.

    Outside Space

The front garden makes a jolly first impression with its four silver birch trees and structural evergreen planting. Similarly, the rear garden has mature shrubs and trees, as well as a shingled path. An elevated rear terrace abuts the house and provides plenty of space for outdoor relaxation.

The Danes Stream ancient woodland sits directly beyond the house, running parallel to the coast and forming part of the Milford-on-Sea Conservation Area.

    The Area

Milford-on-Sea is a picturesque village on the Hampshire coast with a wealth of historic charm. The English Heritage-owned Hurst Castle was built by Henry VIII as a fortress against potential invaders; today, it runs a year-round roster of activities.

There are also vast stretches of coastline to explore, with plenty of water-based activities from kayaking to kite surfing. In the village, there are plenty of independent shops and restaurants including The Lighthouse for brunch, or Paddle on the Green for coffee and pastries.

Nearby Brockenhurst is about a 20-minute drive and is well-known for its picturesque high street. It is home to a branch of Robin Hutson’s The Pig and, a little further north, another of the hotelier's refined endeavours, Lime Wood Hotel. Brockenhurst also has an 18-hole golf course.

The Georgian coastal village of Lymington is a 13-minute drive away. Lymington is popular with the Solent sailing community and is home to the Royal Lymington Yacht Club, as well as numerous restaurants and shops, including a handy branch of Waitrose. Ferries run frequently from Lymington Pier to Yarmouth on the Isle of Wight.

There are plenty of independent and state schooling options nearby. Ballard School, Lymington Infant School, Lymington Junior School, and Walhampton School are some notable local primary and prep schools. Brockenhurst College and Highcliffe School are also excellent nearby secondary school options.

Train services run to London Waterloo from Brockenhurst in as little as 96 minutes. The M27 is also close by for connection to the national motorway network.
