Location
S13 Area Guide
Handsworth, Intake, Normanton Spring, Richmond, Woodhouse, Woodhouse Mill
The S13 postcode area is situated east of Sheffield city centre and comprises the above suburbs. Most of the houses in this area are semi-detached as it is a popular area with families due to the reasonable house prices and the village feel that many of these suburbs have.
The A57 cuts through the west of S13 and runs along the southern border, meaning that there is a direct route into Sheffield city centre via the Parkway and onto the M1, ideal for commuters.
Handsworth is a busy suburb which has five schools, four churches, a variety of small shops, a large supermarket, and a range of commercial and light industrial businesses. Many people still call Handsworth "The Village" as there is a real community feel about the place. One thing that contributes to this is the tradition of the Handsworth sword dancers.
Using long steel swords, a team of eight men perform a dance which lasts about nine minutes and ends with all the swords being interlocked and held aloft by one man. The historic sight of Handsworth sword dancing can still be seen on Boxing Day (or the day after if it falls on a Sunday). They dance at Woodhouse Cross at 11.15 am and in front of St Mary's Church, Handsworth, at noon. The dancers and their audience then adjourn to the pub for well-earned refreshment and communal carol singing.
Situated at the south of S13 is Shirebrook Valley Nature Reserve containing woodland, heathland and marshland. If you are a nature lover then this is a wonderful place to visit as you can find many native birds and animals in their natural habitat such as: Reed buntings, grasshopper warblers, barn owls, harvest mice, water voles and great crested newts amongst others.
The reserve is popular with cyclists and walkers, having a network of paths and the Trans Pennine Trail running through it.
Richmond Park is described as "a real hidden gem in the city" and consists of about 60 acres of land. The park also boasts: A bmx track, zip wire, climbing boulder, football pitch, multi-use games area, pavilion with community room, playground, outdoor gym equipment and community artworks.
If you like to be near open water then S12 has the River Rother running through it along with Lake Waverley and Treeton Dyke. Treeton Dyke allows fishing, although you need to be a member of Treeton Dyke Angling Club.
The following allotment sites can be found in S13; Richmond Allotments, Meetinghouse Allotments, Victoria Road Allotments and Finchwell Road Allotments.
You can always find a local take away in S13 if you do not fancy cooking. All the usual popular cuisines can be found including Indian, Chinese, Fish and Chips and Kebabs. If you fancy eating out, then Pizza Volante offers homemade Mediterranean food. For something more traditional there is The Sword Dancer which offers the reliability of a chain pub and is family friendly. Memory Lane Tea Room is worth a visit for brunch, lunch but most especially high tea. A quaint traditional English tea room but with a few modern twists.
