S9 Area Guide

Attercliffe, Brightside, Darnall, Greenland, Tinsley, Wincobank

The S9 postcode covers a large area to the north east of the city centre. Incorporating the areas mentioned above, much of this postcode is highly industrial due to the inclusion of Brightside and Attercliffe.

The majority of the housing in this area are semi-detached homes closely followed by terraced housing. The house prices in comparison to many other parts of Sheffield are very reasonable meaning that this area is popular amongst first time buyers and investors alike.

The transport links to S9 are excellent, making this area ideal for regular commuters. The Sheffield Parkway curves along the base of S9 and is a major dual carriageway which runs between the city centre and junction 33 of the M1.

Darnall Train Station is on the Sheffield-Lincoln line and is also served by the Saturdays-only service linking Sheffield and Cleethorpes via Brigg.

Meadowhall Interchange is a transport interchange consisting of a combined heavy rail station, tram stop and bus and coach station. Meadowhall Interchange provides connections between National Rail services, the Sheffield Supertram light rail network, intercity coach services and the city bus network.

There are plenty of recreational activities to be found in the S9 area. Valley Centretainment is a leisure park which houses Laser Quest, Hollywood Bowl, Cineworld cinema, adventure golf, and an indoor children's play area.

Team Sport Go Karting can be found in Tinsley and is a state of the art karting track with flyover and electronic timing.

Jump Inc close to Meadowhall shopping centre is a 24,000 sq ft spring-loaded urban playground. Consisting of 120 trampolines, a 3-Sided Walk the Wall, Big Air Bags, Slam Dunk lanes, Jump Tower and Tumble Tracks, Plus Ninja obstacle course, Half Pipe, Bouldering Wall and Freestyle Zone.

The Fly dsa Arena is also situated in S9. Originally built to host the World Student Games, the arena can accommodate audiences from a theatre style 3,500 up to a 13,600 capacity making it the region's biggest capacity indoor Arena. The building is also home to the Sheffield Steelers ice hockey team.

Currently under construction is the Olympic Legacy Park which is a multi-million pound 35 acre site in the Attercliffe area. The park will provide Sheffield and the surrounding areas the facilities to improve their fitness with world-class sports, education, health and leisure facilities. The eiss, Ice Sheffield, Altitude will also be incorporated into the park.

The English Institute of Sport (eis) Sheffield is the country's largest multi-sports training centre and the training base of multiple Olympians, Olympic and World Champions and up-and-coming stars of the future. Specialist facilities include 2 multi-purpose sports halls, table tennis hall, netball hall, basketball hall and a 200m Indoor Athletics Arena and gym facilities.

Ice Sheffield boasts two Olympic ice pads and offers recreational skating to visitors of all ages and abilities and local schools including: Learn to skate and ice hockey lessons, leisure skate sessions and curling.

Altitude High Ropes has 34 obstacles including rope bridges, scramble nets, balance beams, swinging logs, a climbing wall and a 30 foot leap of faith.

High Hazels Park is a 20-hectare park in the Darnall area of Sheffield. It was originally the grounds of High Hazels House, the home of William Jeffcock, the first Mayor of Sheffield. The Grade 2 listed house was built in 1850, and is now the clubhouse for Tinsley Park Golf Club. The building contains a cafe which is open to the public.

Friends of High Hazels Park was formed in 1998 as a result of public anger at the loss of these facilities, and over the last 16 years they have overseen the introduction of two new playgrounds, an artificial cricket pitch and the reinstatement of the circular walk.

Infield Lane Allotments are adjacent to High Hazels Park and is run by Infield Lane Floral & Horticultural Society.

Concord Park is a large park situated between Shiregreen and Wincobank. The park consists of Concord Park Golf Course, a country park and Woolley Woods, bordered by Ecclesfield Road. Concord Park Golf course boasts stunning views over Sheffield and the surrounding area, and also offers other great services such as a driving range, golf lessons, club fitting and a great practise area.

Tinsley Recreation Ground houses a community centre called Tinsley Green and Family Centre; here is where children under 5 years old and their families can access a wide range of support services and information. The ground also has a new 5-aside football pitch, Tennis court, children's playground, adult rides and a cricket bowling practice area.

If retail therapy is your thing, then you are spoiled for choice as situated in S9 is Ikea, Meadowhall and Meadowhall Retail Park. Meadowhall shopping centre is the largest shopping centre in Yorkshire and the eight largest in the U.K. However, it is soon to become the fourth largest once a large extension is opened in 2021.

Due to Valley Centretainment and Meadowhall, S9 has pretty much every chain restaurant covered. Here you can find Chao Baby, Las Iguanas, Carluccios, Pizza Express, BarBurrito, Café Rouge and many more. If you prefer something less mainstream, then there are a few other options too.

Fry Masters is a traditional Fish and Chip takeaway with a restaurant at the back. If you like Indian cuisine then Indus and Mirpuri Dhera have great reviews. Sfinx is a Romanian restaurant and café which is definitely worth a visit if you fancy something different.
