Your guide to moving to Herne Hill

Why Herne Hill is a good place to live

Herne Hill, nestled between Dulwich, Brixton and Peckham in south east London, is a vibrant neighbourhood with large green spaces and super fast connections into the heart of London.

Situated in Zone 2, train journeys from here to central can be done in 10 minutes (London Victoria), while Blackfriars, just north of the river, can be reached in 12 minutes.

An upscale area with a villagey feel, Herne Hill is brimming with beautiful big old Victorian houses and has the much-loved Brockwell Park right on its doorstep.

A vast, hilly green space with spectacular views of the London skyline, Brockwell regularly hosts summer music events featuring some of the industry's biggest names. It has an excellent lido, two cafes and a coffee hut, a walled garden, a good playground and an excellent regional standard BMX track.

Herne Hill itself has a London villagey feel, with a GAIL's and Blackbird Bakery, numerous excellent local restaurants (we love Lombok Thai for eat-in or take-out) and great pubs and bars - The Florence is a family-friendly favourite.

Every Sunday, Herne Hill market takes over the pedestrianised square just outside of the station, selling artisan food, crafts, jewellery, clothing and more.

And with plenty of unique local businesses in the area, selling everything from books and toys to fashion and food, it's a one-of-a-kind neighbourhood in south east London.

What's Herne Hill famous for?

Herne Hill is famous for its historic cycle racing track, the Herne Hill Velodrome, which had the honour of hosting events during the 1948 Summer Olympics.

And the Grade II-listed Brockwell Lido, an inviting outdoor swimming pool framed by a classy Art Deco structure, with an excellent cafe on the side, is highly popular with the locals.

Brockwell Park, loved by residents and visitors alike, hosts summer music festivals and starred in Basement Jaxx's music video for 'Do Your Thing.'

Meanwhile, a visit to The Half Moon pub is a must: it's a beautiful big old watering hole that has been serving patrons since the 17th century.

Things to do in Herne Hill

Start your day with a leisurely walk in Brockwell Park, famed for its panoramic views of London, community greenhouses and BMX track.

Stop by the Herne Hill Market, a bustling spot for local produce and crafts, open every Sunday.

Cool off at the Brockwell Lido, a popular swimming spot, especially during the summer - but even for daredevils in the winter.

If you fancy arts and cultural activities, magic shows at the Illusioneer and film screenings at Whirled Cinema are just the ticket.

And finally, cap off your day with an excellent meal at one of the local gastropubs or many fine eateries serving dishes from around the world on Milkwood Road or Half Moon Lane.
